Match Preview: Holmer Green (H) – League

Forget the return of the Premier League, this weekend marks the start of another enthralling season in the Spartan South Midlands Football League. United begin their campaign at home to Holmer Green on Saturday and will be eager to consign Tuesday night’s FA Cup replay defeat at the hands of Potton United into distant memory.
Despite that setback, pre-season preparations have been relatively good and there is certainly cause of optimism that the team can continue to excel having achieved record finishes in consecutive years. Last season represented a one point and a one place improvement on the previous one which show signs of progress and consolidation in the top half, but Head Coach Cristian Colas and his team will feel that development can be accelerated to see United competing with the real top sides in this division.
There was little to separate the teams in their two meetings last season with United prevailing 1-0 at Second Meadow back in December and The Greens the right side of a 2-0 scoreline at Watchet Lane in April. However, there was a marked difference in the number of points accrued as United finished nineteen points above this weekend’s’ visitors.
In truth it was a disappointing year for Holmer as seventy points and a seventh placed finish in the 2015/16 season appeared a good platform to launch a title tilt the following year potentially, or at least consolidate their position in the upper echelons of the league. That never materialised and The Greens concluded the campaign in 14th place so United should feel confident of securing a positive result on opening day.
But at this level where the margins are so narrow and squads can undergo drastic overhauls during the summer, it’ll be interesting to see the kind of quality the visitors now possess when they arrive at Second Meadow on Saturday, KO 3pm.
