Match Preview: London Colney (H) – League

There reaches a point where a slump can become inescapable and whilst United are certainly not there yet, a fourth consecutive defeat this weekend will raise genuine concerns amongst the camp. Despite leading for the majority of the game on Tuesday evening, two goals in the final ten minutes courtesy of former United players Paul Donald and Adam Drakulic; saw Stotfold take the ‘derby day’ spoils at Roker Park.
A consolation to take from the loss was Ioannis Varouxakis’ first goal for the club and hopefully the prolific frontman can replicate his form at Cockfosters last season this campaign. But the overwhelming feeling is that of frustration and disappointment as to how United conceded that result, and how substandard their start to the season has been. Improvement is required urgently with League Champions London Colney the visitors to Second Meadow on Saturday.
By contrast, The Blueboys have continued the stellar performances that yielded SSMFL Premier Division glory last year by opening with two victories. Having rejected promotion in favour of another year of development at this level, they will be eager to emulate last season’s achievements and a 2-1 win over Leverstock Green followed by a 4-1 triumph at Colney Heath demonstrated that.
Interestingly, however, United were unbeaten in the clubs’ two meetings last year. A respectable 1-1 draw at Cotlandswick Playing Fields in February was built upon in April, as Colney succumbed to one of only seven defeats in their title-winning campaign at the hands of Cristian Colas’ side in a 2-1 reversal.
That performance was illustrative of the heights this team can reach, but they will need to restore the confidence lost in these poor opening few fixtures if they are to secure a similar result at Second Meadow on Saturday, KO 3pm.
