Match Preview: Leighton Town (H) – League
By Leon Waite – @leonwaite98
United’s seven-match unbeaten run came to a grinding halt on Tuesday as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at Baldock Town in the Premier Division Cup- the same venue for a 3-2 league success precisely a week before.
The disappointing result also represented a first loss for Emilio Gutierrez since he assumed the managerial reigns less than a fortnight ago following the sudden departure of his former number one Jimmy Martin. The Spaniard had recorded two terrific away wins prior to the game midweek and will hope to emulate those performances more often than not.
Leighton Town sit 12th in the table having placed 17th and most recently 4th in the two years at this level since their relegation from the Southern League Division One Central.
The Reds- managed by Joe Sweeney- have been quite inconsistent this season and their league position is reflective of that. Results such as last month’s 5-3 win over Stotfold- completing a league double over them after a 6-0 romp earlier in the campaign- highlight the team’s potential but a 7-1 reverse at Tring Athletic serves as a contrast.
London Colney are the only other side they’ve beaten in the league this year but United have failed to beat them in the previous four meetings. Last term they played out a 1-1 draw at Second Meadow with Leighton triumphing 4-0 at Bell Close and the year before saw the points shared at the latter venue, whilst United succumbed 1-0 at home.
So United will be keen to extinguish their winless run against this weekend’s opponents when they host Leighton Town on Saturday, KO 3pm.
